Colorado Unit 70 Elk Hunting: No Draw. No Points. Hunt This Fall.

Bull tags for 2nd and 3rd rifle are sold over the counter, so you can decide this summer and be in elk country this fall. Four points instead of twenty-four? This is your hunt.

The catch is pressure. Anybody can buy a Unit 70 tag. Almost nobody knows where the elk go when the trucks show up. Our family has hunted this unit for over twenty years, and that is the whole job.

What is Colorado Unit 70?

Unit 70 covers roughly 1,500 square miles of southwest Colorado, running about 75 miles southeast from near the Utah line. About 70 percent is public land in the Uncompahgre and San Juan National Forests and BLM, with core elevations of 6,000 to 8,500 feet.

Antlered elk tags for 2nd and 3rd rifle are over the counter, with no draw or points. Archery, muzzleloader, 1st and 4th rifle elk and all mule deer licenses are draw only. Unlimited rifle tags mean heavier pressure than limited units like 61.

Everyone Has a Tag. Not Everyone Knows Where the Elk Went.

Opening morning of 2nd rifle, the roads fill with trucks, wall tents and four-wheelers. Within about thirty-six hours, the elk are gone from every easy place.

Most hunters drive further down the same road. The elk are in the nasty little pockets nobody wants to walk into, and they stay there until it snows.

We have hunted this unit for over twenty years. We know which pockets hold elk in the second week of a hard season, and how to get you in and back out with meat on your back or on our stock. We also own and lease private land, which gives our hunters room the crowds never see.

In Unit 61, you mostly need to find relaxed elk. In Unit 70, finding them is the job.

Fewer Giants. More Seasons.

Unit 70 will not match a premium draw unit on bull density or antler class. Third-party unit data puts the bull-to-cow ratio around 16 per 100. Expect anything from a legal 4-point up to a potential 300-inch bull, with mule deer in the 150 to 170 inch range and 180-plus bucks taken every year by hunters who put in the work.

What you get is time. The hunter with twenty-four points gets one hunt. You can be back here every fall.

FAQ

Is Colorado Unit 70 over the counter?
+
Partly. 2nd and 3rd rifle antlered elk licenses are over the counter for residents and nonresidents, with no draw or points. Archery, muzzleloader and 1st rifle elk, and all mule deer licenses, are draw only.
Can a nonresident buy an over-the-counter archery elk tag in Unit 70?
+
No. Nonresidents now apply for archery elk in units west of I-25, including Unit 70, through the spring draw. Many of those licenses go unclaimed and turn up in the August leftover sale.
How many points do you need for Unit 70?
+
None for 2nd or 3rd rifle elk. Mule deer takes points, with the later rifle seasons taking the most. Check CPW's current draw recap.
When do Unit 70 over-the-counter elk tags go on sale?
+
OTC and leftover licenses typically go on sale in early August. Our calendar fills well before that, so book your hunt dates with us first and buy the tag second.
Can I hunt deer in Unit 70 without points?
+
Not likely. Deer licenses go through the draw statewide, and Unit 70 deer takes preference points. If you do not draw, private landowner vouchers are sometimes available through the landowner. Call us and we will tell you what is out there this season.
What are the Unit 70 season dates?
+
2026 dates for reference: archery September 2 to 30, muzzleloader September 12 to 20, 1st rifle October 14 to 18, 2nd rifle October 24 to November 1, and 3rd rifle November 7 to 15. Colorado adjusts dates every year, so confirm in the CPW Big Game Brochure before booking travel.
How crowded is Unit 70 during rifle season?
+
Hunter pressure is heavy during 2nd and 3rd rifle because elk tags are unlimited, and elk move into dense, hard-to-reach cover within the first days of the season. Knight Canyon Outfitters also owns and leases private land, which gives our hunters options the public-land crowd does not have.
What size elk does Unit 70 produce?
+
Unit 70 is managed for opportunity rather than trophy quality. Expect anything from a legal 4-point up to a potential 300-inch bull, with a bull-to-cow ratio near 16 per 100. More mature bulls are out there, but they are few and far between.
What is a drop camp, and is it right for me?
+
We pack you and your gear into good backcountry, set up a tent camp with cots and a stove, and leave you to hunt on your own. You handle your own cooking and hunting decisions. It suits experienced, self-sufficient hunters who want backcountry access without hauling in a full camp themselves.
Should I hunt Unit 70 or Unit 61?
+
Hunt Unit 70 this year for anything from a legal 4-point up to a potential 300-inch bull. More mature bulls are out there, but they are few and far between. Build points for Unit 61 if you want 340-plus potential and can wait roughly two decades as a nonresident. Many of our clients do both.
Where do I fly into for a Unit 70 hunt?
+
Montrose (MTJ) is the airport we recommend. It is a straightforward drive to our lodge near Norwood, in San Miguel County, and the easiest way to start your hunt on schedule. Grand Junction, Telluride and Cortez also serve the area if flights line up better for you.
Do I need four-wheel drive to hunt Unit 70?
+
Four-wheel drive is recommended, and chains are a good idea in the late seasons. Weather moves fast in this country and can change road conditions overnight.

Also Considering Unit 61?

Unit 61 sits just north on the Uncompahgre Plateau: a limited-draw quality unit with bigger antler potential and a roughly two-decade nonresident wait. Plenty of our clients hunt 70 every fall while their 61 points build.

The Tag Is Easy. A Spot in Our Camp Is Not.

Just a tag, a date, and a family that knows where the elk go when the trucks show up.

Small groups of 4 to 5 hunters, and our calendar fills before the August tag sale. Call before you buy anything.
